Cybersecurity Starts With Your Actions

The majority of security attacks stem from human error. Your system is only as safe as you are. Don’t be the weakest link in your cyber security!

• • Change Your Mindset
    When it comes to security, never think “it won’t happen to me”. You wouldn’t leave the door to your house unlocked, so why would you leave your data open to hackers?
    Remember, a little inconvenience goes a long way to secure your data.

• • Practice Safe Clicking
    Hover over all links to display their URL. If you do not recognize where a link is going, don’t click it. Check unfamiliar links via Norton Safe Web.

• • Beware of Social-Engineering
    The most common error employees make is giving secure data to people who pretend to be someone they know, or a company their business works with.“Hi, I’m Joe and I work for Verve. We saw some issues with your network security. Can I get your password please?”
    Don’t be afraid to say no! If something seems fishy, trust your instincts.

• • Double Check Email Sender
    Email addresses have become easier to spoof (fake), and cyber criminals are using this to trick users. Email addresses can look very similar.For example, if you receive an email from admin@vervenetworks.ca you might mistake it for an email from us. But our domain is verveit.com.

• • Complex Passwords
    A 20 character all lower-case password is more secure than an 8-character password with caps and symbols.Create complex passwords. Don’t use the same password for multiple sites.
    

• • Use Password Managers
    Remembering all of your passwords is practically impossible. Using a password manager will help you keep your accounts secure, while allowing you to keep your passwords complex and different for every site you use. Try LastPass, 1Password, or Dashline

• •  Always Use Two-Factor Authentication (when available)
    Protect your account from access, even when your account’s password has been compromised. Two-factor authentication will send you a text message or email with a code to verify that new device logins belong to you.

• • Firewall and Antivirus
    If your business firewall doesn’t block malicious websites or have antivirus built in, it’s time to upgrade! A firewall that scans files throughout your network for viruses is extremely important in today’s age of digital crime. Couple this with antivirus software on your workstations, and your chances of being infected become significantly low.

• • Be wary of Public WiFi
    Do not use public WiFi to check sensitive information, financial websites, or company data.

• • Plug and Infect
    Do not plug in USBs, drives, or smartphones into your computer without knowing their source. These devices can include malicious code that will immediately infect a PC. A Secret Service Agent recently found USBs smuggled into Mar-a-Lago with malicious code on them.
